On 23 Aug 2023 – On Thursday Rajya Sabha passed a bill that replaces the existing legislation which governs the registration of print and publishing industry in the country. The Press and Registration of Periodicals Bill, 2023 was passed by a voice vote.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur said, The Narendra Modi government has given “more freedom to the press” in stark contrast to the Congress, which inherited a “British” mindset from the former colonial rulers. This new bill simplifies the process and endorses ease of doing business in this print and publishing sector.
